It's just random bits of stuff I feel like writing down and sharing with my audience, be they real or imaginary. If I become uninspired, it's all your fault.Harry Flashmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05934434757711097097noreply@blogger.comBlogger28125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7946642644500060659.post-70718711395148992522020-10-25T16:58:00.001-07:002020-10-25T17:39:17.825-07:00Marion's "Top 50 Albums" List
Rolling Stone magazine recently published its updated "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. I looked through the list, and read some of the specific choices submitted by a few of the voting critics. That was fun, so, lover of lists, music, and individual differences that I am, I was inspired to try and make a Top 50 albums list of my own. A perfect project for a pandemic, and though it seemed daunting, I know these things are never rigid and I can change it next week if I want to. I cheated by only allowing one album per artist/band. That helped a little.

I almost didn't include a Beatles album, but in the end I replaced NEBRASKA by Bruce Springsteen with a Beatles album. I was scared of getting yelled at by Beatles fanatics, but I am prepared to take the punches from Springsteen fanatics. I picked The Beatles 1967-1970. That's the blue one, not the red one. Most of my favourite Beatles songs are on that compilation.

There was no question that Steve Earle had to be on this list, but I had such a hard time deciding which album to choose. I really like SO YOU WANNA BE AN OUTLAW and GHOSTS OF WEST VIRGINIA, but they are so recent and I always think I should choose albums that have already stood the test of time. I love GUITAR TOWN as much as everyone else does, but I went with TRANSCENDENTAL BLUES because I love "Steve's Last Ramble" and "Galway Girl" so much.

Shortlisted artists who, sadly, got eliminated and deserve an honourable mention (because on a different day they might have made the cut) are: Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Leonard Cohen, Guy Clark, Tom Zé, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Eno, Merle Haggard, Townes Van Zandt, Iggy Pop/The Stooges, Kris Kristofferson, Patti Smith, Flamin' Groovies, The Cramps, The Band, Los Lobos, Kleenex/LiLiPUT, Husker Dü, Sam Cooke, Iris Dement, Jimmie Rodgers, The Carter Family, Roxy Music, and The Sonics (I'm sure I'm forgetting some). My apologies to all of you because you deserve to be included.

I refused to drive myself crazy trying to rank my list in order of preference, so I will do it alphabetically. Enjoy.

Beatles- 1967-1970 (blue album)

<span style="font-family: arial; Catherine Street yesterday, going to get my eyebrows waxed. When I reached the salon, there was a man standing alone in the doorway next door. He looked at me then at the invisible person next to him, pointed directly at me and said, "LOOK AT HER!" He looked at me again then back at his invisible friend and added "SHE THINKS SHE'S SATAN!!!" I need to start getting my eyebrows waxed more frequently.Harry Flashmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05934434757711097097noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7946642644500060659.post-73012679586056164472011-09-09T13:38:00.000-07:002011-09-09T13:38:02.610-07:00Three, no, two reasons why not to die...A few years ago, I was driving to Vermont for the weekend. My older daughter and her friend were in the car, and so was my younger daughter. It was the middle of winter and my younger daughter, who was about six at the time, was looking forward to swimming in the indoor pool at the hotel. Though it was quite cold outside, the sun was strong and it was hot in the car. She was sitting directly in the sun in the back seat of the car squirming in discomfort. She said to us, "I can think of three reasons why I don't want to die today. One, I really want to go swimming today. Two, I don't want to get any closer to that sun than I have to, and three... wait, there are two reasons, not three."Harry Flashmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05934434757711097097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7946642644500060659.post-87755204150096643952011-07-05T12:25:00.000-07:002011-07-05T12:25:13.553-07:00There's a rooster in the trunk!

When I was younger, I used to have a little Kellogg's Corn Flakes battery operated alarm clock. When it went off, the realistic sound of a rooster crowing jolted me awake. My father used to borrow it from time to time if he was going to have friends riding in the back seat of his car. He would put the clock in the trunk and set it to go off while they were riding in the car. When the friends questioned it, he would act all annoyed. "Oh damn, the rooster is loose in the trunk again".
Woman: I just went to The Bay to pick up a portrait of myself that I had taken. The funny thing is, it's not a picture of me at all. It's a picture of Linda Cavanagh! There's nothing wrong with that. Linda Cavanagh is a very nice looking girl, but it was supposed to be a picture of me! I went and had it taken! I do know Linda Cavanagh. I grew up with her on Rosedale Street in NDG. I'm going to send the picture to my aunt for Christmas. She lives out in Alberta. She'll just have a picture of Linda Cavanagh instead of me. Isn't that funny? Oh well, ha ha ha.

MSD: When the animals at the SPCA don't get adopted and they have to kill them, how do they do it?
M: Oh, they have to give them a needle that puts them to sleep. They don't feel anything, it's just as if they've gone to sleep but they never wake up because they are in fact dead.
MSD: Oh good! I thought they stabbed them!
I'm writing this without any comic books nearby to refer to, so I'm relying on my memory to serve me well.

***

Dot and her DOTS!!

The first to come to mind is Little Dot Polka, the little girl with the unhealthy obsession with dots. Yes, DOTS!! She She painted them on everything she had, wore dot printed clothing all the time, did anything she had to to surround herself in them. She also had bags full of them, boxes full of them, and a closet full of them. To this day, I am intrigued as to what exactly these physical dots were?!?! They appeared to be flat black round discs of some sort. Wha?? Where did she get them?? She found them everywhere she went!! And much to her father's chagrin, she never ceased bringing more of them into the house. What were they?? On the cover of the comic shown here, it appears as though she glued them onto her dress and the wind blew them off, so I guess they weren't very heavy. Dot's father was always around more than her mother was. He was a short tempered guy who would fly off the handle all the time, fed up with Dot's dottiness and their house full of dots; however, it would never take long for Dot to charm her way back into Dad's heart and she would henceforth resume her obsession of adding more and more of those flat black dots to her collection.

***

Little Lotta was a great character too. She was Little Dot's best friend, probably because she was too busy eating to notice what a nutcase Dot was. Lotta's obsession was with food, and the more she ate, the stronger she became! She wasn't very smart, but she was good natured, and always willing to help out by using her super strength. The best part of the Little Lotta stories was her little boyfriend Gerald's great one word reactions. Gerald was a meek boy with glasses so thick you couldn't see his eyes, who always wore a hat and a big bow tie. Time and time again Lotta would do her super stunts for his benefit. Things such as laying a tree across a road to stop traffic so that Gerald could cross to the other side without getting hit, or lifting up a huge boulder so that Gerald could retrieve the marble he had dropped. Yet every time Lotta performed these deeds of super strength to help him, he would catch me off guard by responding with a weak "gosh" or "gee". Ha ha ha, Gerald! What a riot!!
I'll list them in chronological order, because it is too difficult to rank them in order of preference. They're all great! Lola deserves to be included on this list, but I purposely left it out because everyone knows it very well and it is too obvious a masterpiece. What I love most about The Kinks is their lyrics, which range from innocent and pure to funny to reflective andromanticizing of the everyday.

I know a month from now I'm going to re-read this top 20 compilation and think "why didn't I put ____ on this list?" I'm already regretting the exclusion of Celluloid Heroes, the first Kinks song I ever heard, and so exquisite a piece! Lucky for it I'm a sneak and it just got mentioned and pointed out as exquisite right here in my little intro!

THE LIST:

1.) A WELL RESPECTED MAN 1965. This song is a wonderfully folksy, used-on-the-Juno-film-soundtrack, sing-a-long tune about a well respected man-about-town, doing the best things so conservatively. Oh yes it is...oh yes it is! I like the sense of forward movement this song evokes. I could never walk backwards and listen to this song at the same time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwpW-8uM4fA&feature=related

2.) PARTY LINE 1966. A great example of an early, raw, Kinks song bashed out by the unmistakable sound of Dave Davies' guitar. It reminds me of Last Train To Clarksville by The Monkees, only it's much better and raunchier! I love the telephone operator intro which leads us into this boppy thrash tune sung by Dave. I want to fling my arms and legs around when I listen to it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbrc_RC3Ec8

3.) SUNNY AFTERNOON 1966. Here is a classic Kinks song everyone knows which cannot be ignored. I love being part of the audience when Ray Davies sings this one at live concerts. The entire audience always knows every single word and we become one big shiny happy family singing together while swaying to and fro in time to the music. Ha ha ha happy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h1oRP7FfBw

4.) THIS IS WHERE I BELONG 1966. I love the circular quality of this song. It entrances, captivates, and spins your head around, because this is where you belong. I'd like to spin around outdoors and look at the blue sky above me while listening to this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHGaIAm22Rw

5.) WATERLOO SUNSET 1967. Arguably the best song Ray Davies ever wrote. I adore it too, but I can't single it out as his best. It's the story of a man, alone in his room, gazing out his window at the beautiful sunset taking place beyond the dirty river and train station and the dizzying, noisy crowds, as he also beholds Terry and Julie happy together in love oblivious to their surroundings. The man is content to be alone in his room because as long as he gazes on Waterloo Sunset, he is in paradise. It's lovely!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvDoDaCYrEY

6.) AUTUMN ALMANAC 1967. I've always considered Autumn Almanac to be just as wonderful as Sunny Afternoon, but for some reason it was never as popular. It's pretty special when you can sing along to lyrics like "ooooh, my poor rheumatic back" and still feel happy. I like to either march around like a preschooler or rake leaves while listening to this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNgo07Cg7lI

7.) WONDERBOY 1968. Allegedly John Lennon's favourite Kinks song. It's a pleasant piece, typical Ray Davies. I want to sit at an outdoor terrasse wearing a wide brimmed sun hat and sip on a Marguarita while I sing along to this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2Ml1k8BPe8

8.) ANIMAL FARM 1968. Ah, now we're talking! One of the many masterpieces from The Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society album. I love the eager tone of this song. It makes me long to live just a quiet quiet life, by a dirty old shack that I call my home... Animal Farm!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9sY3NKP7is

9.) DAYS 1968. Now this song is definitely one of my top 5 favourite Kinks songs ever. It packs such a gentle, wistful punch. It is beautiful, respectful and sincere.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKJTJsIYktI&feature=related

10.) PICTURE BOOK 1968. I'm not sure what my favourite track from Village Green Preservation Society actually is; it's a toss up between Picture Book and Starstruck. Picture Book is seductive. It's a finger snapping tune I have to use my shoulders to dance to as I snap away.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjDu3E5zDks

11.) PICTURES IN THE SAND 1968. I thought it only fitting that my blog's namesake be included on this list. This is a lovely, carefree, romantic little piece and I love it. I want it to be MY song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHCHF299810

12.) STARSTRUCK 1968. Starstruck is a sweet old rock and roll song that leads you to the edge of a cliff then pulls you back to safety just as you're about to fall off. It also drives me insane because the world's not so tame.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8osV1ZbLJLE

13.) BIG SKY 1968. By compiling this list, I am realizing that 1968 seems to be an important year, musically, for the Kinks (according to me). So, yeah, my favourite track from VGPS is a toss up between Picture Book, Starstruck, AND Big Sky. This is a great song-- hopeful and inspiring. It's pure beauty. It should be used in advertisements for charity organizations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGLgdMQbCjE

14.) ARTHUR 1969. One of the catchiest guitar riffs in the Kinks archives. This song is so underrated! I like the vocals running parallel to the guitar, dontcha know it. I would shuffle along to this song, à la Pink Panther in his animated cartoon series, any day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1L4QzSPdY4

15.) SHANGRI-LA 1969. Shangri-La is another favourite from the Arthur album. It gets off to a quiet, acoustic start, and builds itself into an energetic, powerful anthem that really works well. I love listening to this song right after I put on my slippers and sit by the fire.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kt0IXkIVvo4

16.) APEMAN 1970. This was my favourite song for years, and no wonder!! It's so darn likable!! Nice piano and cool sound effects + very humble and inspiring lyrics = yet another successful Kinks song. If only I could sit in the trees and eat bananas all day...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEep67akIn4

17.) GET BACK IN LINE 1970. Get Back in Line is so romantic! All he wants to do is make some money and bring me home some wine. Awwwww... as if my cup isn't already runneth-ing over. This song is outstanding and poignant and is impossible to resist.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7HAfWWNQcI

18.) MUSWELL HILLBILLY 1971. The Kinks go country and obtain very pleasing results indeed. Great twanging. I like to sit leaning forward with my hands on my knees when I listen to this one. My heart lies in old West Virginia. Boone County to be exact...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82cmmVHiFnI

19.) SWEET LADY GENEVIEVE 1973. This is my obscure Kinks song pick. This has always been one of my favourite of the Kinks lesser-known songs. From its lovely harmonica beginning right through to the end, the song simply soars. The song is a lament about lost love, best listened to outdoors or while driving a car.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqgNyYXTK4s

20.) MISFITS 1977. Misfits was a great album, and the first Kinks album I ever bought. It was 1978. This title track is a very beautiful, even, thoughtful song about misfits. They're everywhere.
My name is Marion W. and I am menu challenged.

I saw Black Swan last night, and I remembered the time I watched my first Aronofsky film, Requiem for a Dream. When I put the Requiem for a Dream DVD into my DVD player to watch it, I thought something was wrong with my machine because it showed the ad for that game show from the movie on the disc's Main Menu and the picture was all snowy. I thought my machine had turned itself off and my TV was on, all snowy. I turned my machine off and on 4 times and I kept taking the disc out and putting it back in again. After the fourth time, I caught on that every time I turned it back on, I was seeing the exact same scene with the exact same line being repeated, so wait a minute, maybe this was not my TV, and oh yeah, I didn't have a TV antenna anymore, I had cable, so even if my machine had have turned itself off, the TV would be playing clearly, not all snowy.

On another occasion, I wasted about 45 minutes trying to figure out how to navigate the Main Menu when I went to watch the DVD of Memento. The menu had all these multiple choice psychological questions at the beginning and I couldn't figure out how to get around them and just play the movie! Nothing was straightforward about it. I tried everything!! I finally thought to Google "navigating the Memento main menu", got some basic instructions from my search results, and had it all figured out within about thirty seconds.
There was a first guy, a girl, and a second guy.
FG: I come from Halifax.
G: Oh, you're from one extreme side of Canada and I'm from the other!
SG: to girl, You're from Victoria?
G: Nooooo! Not that extreme!! I'm from Burnaby.
SG: to first guy, You're from Halifax? Is that in Nova Scotia?
FG: Yes, Nova Scotia.
SG: Oooooh, so you're a Newfie!
I took the earphones out, and the following conversation ensued between me and the guy...

M: Ha ha, did you think I was somebody else?
G: Did I think you were somebody else? No, I didn't think you were somebody else. I was wondering if you wanted to take a look at some books I have.
M: Oh, um, no. I don't have much time, I'm on my lunch hour and I have to be back at work in 10 minutes.
G: It won't take long. It will take 2 minutes. Do you have 2 minutes?
M: 2 minutes? Well, OK. 2 minutes. What kind of books are they? Text books?
G: I have many different kinds of books.
The guy laid his bike down on the grass and proceeded to pull out book after book until his backpack was entirely empty and he had about 20 books lying across the grass on display, none of any interest to me.
G: I have something for everyone here.
I looked over the books. There was a soiled Mickey Mouse book, a ten year old copy of an old Western Civilization textbook, and several other gems.
M: Oh, I guess I don't really need any books.
G: These are great books! My garage is full of them and I have to get rid of them because I need more space. I hate to part with them. Hey, I'm an honest guy. I sell "read"; not "weed". Ha ha. I'll give you a really good deal. What kind of books do you like?
M: Oh, I don't know. I don't have much time for reading. Maybe I'll take one for my daughter.
G: What does she like?
M: She likes true stories.
G: Here's a good one... he picked up a tattered paperback called "Death Dealers" by Yves Lavigne that had an elastic band around it to prevent all the loose pages from falling out... it was written by a Montrealer. It's a true story about drug smugglers.
M: Oh, OK. Well, maybe I'll take that one. I figured it would be cheap, considering its condition...
G: You might as well get one for yourself, too.
M: Ya, I guess so. I picked up an old hard covered book and looked at the cover: "Between You and Me" by Harry Lauder. I opened the book and read the first line: "It's a bonny world, I'm tellin' ye." "Sold!" I said to the guy. "How much do you want for these 2 books?"
G: Oh, I don't know... five dollars?
I handed him a five dollar bill, groaning inside. I returned to work where my co-workers asked why I was carrying around 2 cigarette smoke infested old books. "Leave me alone, " I told them. The stranger was seen some weeks later pawning DVDs on campus, and I just saw him again today, riding his bicycle through the campus in Arctic weather conditions, his bulging backpack in tow.
He means so well! He eventually gets set up by evil businessmen and ends up in prison. When he is released from prison, society doesn't treat him very kindly. Noooo! Why does it have to be that way? Michael's optimistic nature ultimately prevails. What doesn't kill one indeed makes one stronger.
I think it helps that he feels an intense emotional attachment to the music of Ludwig Van Beethoven; it's the one thing he loves with a passion. Awww :)

Malcolm's portrayal of H.G. Wells is sweet. H.G. is not the charming thing that my other four picks are. Wells is a shy, reserved, tweed suit kind of guy, but the ingrained coolness of McDowell cannot be suppressed so it all just works. He is funny in his naive way. He's the rational guy in this adventurous chase flick about serial killer Jack the Ripper. He's just this cute little curious serious guy with a slight sense of humour who travels to the future in his time machine in order to stop Jack's killing spree. Great story idea by a writer named Karl Alexander and interesting performance by Malcolm. Worth watching!
I only saw this movie once, when it was first released on VHS. I rented it from a local video store. I hardly remember it, but in this film Malcolm portrays a flamboyant rock star, his name is Reggie Wanker, and he is charming to beat heck, so I'm picking it as my number 5 choice here. Lou Reed is in this film too, significantly increasing the coolness factor of this movie all the more!
Frankie works for the Mafia but he can't shut up. He squeals on everyone because it makes him feel big.
He creates his works on found materials such as old, used pieces of wood, and with the additional use of objects such as bottle caps, marbles, crushed cans, doll eyes, and water putty, he builds them up into 3D pieces. He paints with oil based enamel paints. None of his works are complete until he finishes them off by sealing them with a few coats of high gloss polyurethane. That's what gives them their shininess.

The characters depicted in his paintings range from bizarre to creepy to beautiful to mysterious to sneaky to seductive to funny to evil to freakish, and he paints them in a style that is neat, tidy, clean, clear, and concise. You'll notice a lot of recurring motifs in Levent's works such as roses, eye masks, cloudy blue skies, round trees with intricate branches, high rise buildings, face paint, cats, birds, rabbits, and more.

I'm now going to post 30 of my favourite works by Levent and give you my two cents worth on each of them. Before I start, I want to mention, because I'm sure you'll want to know, that my favourite of the recurring Isik trademark themes are:

1-- the cloudy blue skies (see paintings 3, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 21, 28),
2-- the black eye masks (see 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 19, 22, 25, 27), and
3-- the high rise buildings (see 4, 15, 17, 22).

Behold the coolest art you'll ever lay your eyes on. Levent Isik knows how to have fun; this is evident in the entertaining fruits of his labour. Thank you, Levent, for providing your fans with happiness through your art.

I hope you will all appreciate his work as much as I do.
It was supposed to be the maple leaf from the Canadian flag, but something, somewhere, between the face painter's hand and my face, went horribly wrong, and I ended up with this creepy design. This painting is dear to my heart, but not only do I love it for the face paint design, I also happen to be a baby fanatic! I think all babies are adorable and this little guy with his snake is no exception. Bless his diabolical little soul.

There is so much that is wonderful about this painting. Its magnificent attention to detail, its patterns, its subject material... all of its components work so well together. The straight lines in the woman's dress and hair, her fishnet stockings, the rectangular bricks on the path, the zigzag dog with the horsie tail, the circles on the bird, the branches on the tree in the background... it's all so flawless. The path is perfectly placed. Everything in this painting is so tidy. I love the dog's teeth and tongue. I love the curves of the landscape where it meets the horizon. Yes I am gushing. The jagged wood used in this work gives it a "peeking out through a hole" effect that works really well. There's my awesome cloudy sky in the background; and, in the foreground, a beautiful girl with a long red train flowing down from her head. The train divides the scene in two, the girl in the lower half and a bird in the upper half. I'm guessing the person peeking out on these visions of delight longs for what he sees: the companionship of the beautiful girl and the freedom of the bird. It's simply brilliant.
This painting takes me back to my childhood and I like that. These women are 2 little girls having a tea party in their little playhouse in the backyard. I love the pink and green dresses, the purple walls, ceiling and floor, and the little chairs. The heavenly clouds and the checkerboard tablecloth make the whole thing visually stunning.
These women, too, remind me of little girls. Their adult friendship is no different from the friendship of any two little girls playing together, sharing their dollhouses with one another. The curved wood of the buildings frame these neighbours so nicely and, oh my, there are those delectable clouds again!

The oblong shape of this painting is very appealing. What an interesting room! I just want to stare at it. I love the positioning of its contents. Numbers 24-30 on my list all share something in common. They each feature the depiction of a different bizarre trio of characters. This work features a button in the bottom right corner that, when pressed, causes the green guy to spank the woman. Kitty is grinning. The cards, the madness, it's all wonderful there in Wonderland! Let's see now... a jack-in-the-box with a marvelously colourful neck and a masterfully crafted face made from a crushed can of hair spray... a free floating bunny... and a woman in karate chop stance. MFD: (to MBG) Nice day, eh?
MBG: (not understanding) Pardon me?
MFD: It's a nice day.
TROU: She is saying that it's a nice day...
MBG: Oh, it's a nice day! Yes, it's a beautiful day!!
MFD: Nice day to shoot something.
TROU: ha ha ha ha ha

(OK, maybe she had been watching too much Elmer Fudd!!)
The school my 8 year old daughter attends sent a note home right before Halloween discouraging the passing out of Halloween candy by the children to their classmates. They encourage, instead, the passing out of "nutritious treats such as apples or raisins." I didn't let my daughter do that because I kind of don't like it when she gets punched in the face.
He spent long hours in the editing room cutting away as many bits of film showing people blinking that he could. Thank you, Russ, for your painstaking attention to detail.
